“Sabina” is a suite of improvised music about nature and magic. About the kind of traces we leave or want to leave on Earth. All music on this tape (except A4) was improvised and recorded in one take in Corbeil-Essonnes, France, during the last week of October 2015. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Richard Francés.

Francés is a French composer/musician born in Alicante in 1981 and now based in Paris. His project Acid Fountain seeks to bring together abstract and representational art, improvisation and composition, experimental and dance musics.

Other projects by Francés include Juju, his “électronique libre” duo with Adrien Kanter. He also composes, arranges and tours with French pop artists such as Owlle and Adrien Soleiman, to name but two… As a live performer, he has worked on Julien Lheuillier’s kosmische musik project Pointe du Lac and in 2015 has collaborated with the French art/dance collective (LA)HORDE (one the projects "Novaciéries" and "Night Owl").

In January 2015 Richard founded the label Hylé Tapes: an experimental electronic music label releasing limited edition cassettes by international artists like Takahiro Mukai, Raphael Leray, D. Burke Mahoney, Jay Glass Dubs and Mortuus Auris & The Black Hand.

"Recorded in one take in Corbeil-Essonnes, France, last October, Sabina seems to be the result of Acid Fountain taking inspiration from The Tapeworm label’s wish to get artists sprawling out across the sides of the format. Richard Francés - the man behind both Acid Fountain and the Parisian Hylé Tapes label - has improvised a stellar suite of chugging beats and cosmic tones here. Initially he pummels a drum machine through a stereo spread delay in the manner of Autechre’s epochal Amber for the opening ‘Dreaming/Drumming’ before mutating into beautiful drift of airlock notes on ‘San Pedro’ and then a cute noisy matchup between field recorded bird song and an overture of long sustained keyboard notes on ‘Goodbye Industry’. ‘Heavy Sand’ rounds off the 19 minute A Side with a funkified jazz-techno miniature, clearly scarred from the live recording process, nonetheless utterly ridiculous when one remembers it’s an improvisation. Things remain beatless generally deeper throughout side B’s dreamlike trilogy of tracks. ‘Terres Rares’ is a hall of mirrors composed of degraded piano sounds spiralling around the listener, while the seamless ‘Étoiles Filantes’ and ‘Mujer Espíritu’ could easily be an alternative soundtrack to Blade Runner’s love scenes. Beautifully yearning synthesizer notes stretch out from Francés’ fingers as he gently opens filters and tones linger in a wide open reverb pedal for dozens of seconds at a time. He eventually wiggles notes and climbs scales higher and higher, tracing a melody that abandons Earthly delights and heads straight for the heavens.

Acid Fountain’s previously issued synthesizer-and-drum-machine albums on his own label, are built from similar base materials, though not recorded with such spontaneity. The limitations of the live takes on Sabina force Acid Fountain to bang harder than ever when doing the techno stuff, and evolve the melodies of those softer tunes organically. The results are spine-tingling.

"Fondateur du label de cassette Hylé Tapes dont on vante souvent les faits d’arme en ces pages, le musicien français Richard Frances est aussi accompagnateur du poppeux Adrien Soleiman ou de Julien Lheullier pour son projet kraut kosmische Pointe du Lac. En septembre dernier, il sortait une cassette sous le nom de son projet solo Acid Fountain, Sabina, improvisations techno et ambient expérimentales enregistrées en une prise en forme d’appels à la nature. Le morceau "Dreaming/Drumming", qui rappelle un peu les premiers Autechre, ferait d’ailleurs probablement un tabac dans un jardin partagé."

"Acid Fountain – Sabina

Boss du label Hylé Tapes, petite entreprise spécialisée dans l’édition de projets électroniques underground en cassette, Richard Francès continue son aventure musicale sous le pseudo Acid Fountain avec « Sabina », un album aux confins de la techno, nous susurrant d’impressionnantes constructions sonores, allant jusqu’à l’ambient tout en flirtant avec la musique cosmique et la house.

Depuis l’époque du titre « Altana + Adult Aural Tears » chez Alpage Records, l’artiste multiplie les projets avant-gardistes sans jamais se perdre dans une faille atrabilaire où il délaisse la beauté des harmonies. Il arpente avec ce nouveau projet le chemin d’une musique toujours aussi libre, avec cette science de l’expérimentation, qu’il lui permet d’éviter l’enfouissement dans des recoins bruitistes qui implosent en vol. Il nous dévoile aujourd’hui sept nouvelles mélodies, quasiment toutes improvisées et surtout enregistrées en une seule prise.

Un projet édité chez The Tapeworm, label dont la particularité est qu’il se refuse à diffuser ses musiques en digital. De la cassette, rien que de la cassette, à l’ancienne diront certains. Excentrique posture, mais qui n’est pas dénuée de charme, surtout avec d’excellents projets. En témoigne, ce titre posté par l’artiste lui-même sur SoundCloud, baptisé « Dreaming/Drumming », pour nous révéler ce qui se trame derrière cette musique bien gardée.

Le refrain « Techno, toujours pareil » psalmodié par les loufoques Salut C’est Cool se mord ici la queue, face à l’inventivité qu’injecte Acid Fountain dans ses créations, reprenant les codes de la musique de club pour lui insuffler d’autres directions. Il isole notre esprit dans une boucle qu’il étaye de multiples variations soniques, tout en jouant la carte du vintage, avec des sons rappelant les prémices du genre. Les vibrations frénétiques se mutent en grondements telluriques saisissants au sein de l’espace où la sono gronde.

Continuant de collaborer au projet Pointe du Lac de Julien Lheuillier ou travaillant avec Adrien Soleiman sur le récent album « Brille », Francès titille toujours aussi bien nos oreilles avec ses synthétiseurs analogiques, qui infusent dans l’essence même de ce qui forge un artiste : la découverte ! « Sabina » est un palais cosmique où réside un fourmillement de trouvailles électroniques, qui enchanteront les auditeurs en quête d’idées nouvelles. Il n’y plus qu’à enfoncer la cassette dans un lecteur et à se laisser porter ! Partant sur les traces que nous laissons dans ce monde, son nouveau projet laissera son empreinte dans les esprits de ceux qui prennent le temps de s’y attarder."
